Decluttering After the Holidays

The holidays have come and gone, and another year has passed (though we can probably all agree that we are pleased to see 2020 behind us). Now that we are into the New Year, it is a great time to reevaluate what you have in your home. At Sencillo, we are big advocates for simplifying your home and your life so that you can focus on what matters most.

Here are some tips for decluttering after the holidays and simplifying your life:

  1. Out With The Old, In With The New

Even if you live a mostly clutter-free life, the holidays often have a sneaky way of cluttering your home and your life all over again. If you have brought anything new into your home over the holidays, make sure it has a proper place in your home, and it doesn’t become added clutter. If you purchased or were gifted new cookware, new clothing, new holiday decorations, etc., you should evaluate your similar items and see if these can replace the old ones. Your old cookware deserves to be retired to make room for the new set!

  2. Think About ‘Less and More’

At Sencillo, we like to design your home with less — and more. More of what you love, less of what you don’t. This is the way that you should look at the things in your home. If there is anything that you don’t love, it’s time for it to hit the curb. Any broken and unwanted holiday decorations should not be boxed up and stored with the rest of your items, and the ugly Christmas sweaters that you continue to keep but never wear could probably be donated.

  3. Take a Hard Look at the Kitchen

With the flurry of cooking that we are sure you were doing over the holidays (even if it was for a smaller crowd than usual), we are confident that your kitchen could use some organizing. Is there some expired packaged food hiding in the depths of your pantry? Has your Tupperware drawer been ravaged for your leftovers and left in shambles? Take everything out of your fridge, pantry, and cabinets and take a good hard look at what you have. Then, only put back what you are going to eat, and use. There is no use hanging on to anything else.

  4. Give Some Love to Your WFH Desk

Over the holidays, those of us that have been working from home hopefully took some time off, and likely, our office or desk may have turned into a dumping ground for your odds and ends (we are sometimes guilty of this too!). Now that we are all returning to work, it’s time to clear off your desk and give it some love (yes, even if your WFH desk is the kitchen counter). Your productivity will suffer if your desk is cluttered with Christmas cards, toys to fix for your kids, and those important papers you promised yourself that you’d look at in the New Year.
