4 Tips to Rescue the Space Under Your Sink

The space under the sink in both the kitchen and bathroom is notorious for being cramped, disorganized and, as a result, a wasted space. If you have limited cabinetry choices in your kitchen, or if your bathroom vanity is the only storage you have to utilize, having wasted space is not an option.

Here are our 4 tips to rescue the valuable space under your sink:

  1. Prioritize Your Items

There is a constant battle for space that we wage with the under-sink plumbing in this cramped cabinet. Because of this, the cabinet often becomes a magnet for clutter and junk. Pull out everything and strategize what should belong, and what can be rehomed elsewhere, or tossed. We bet the half-used, mostly forgotten cleaning products could use some consolidating.

  2. What Not To Have

Under your bathroom and kitchen sink, there are many important items to include, but others you should go without. These include any leaking, expired cleaning or personal products (toss these!), harsh chemicals that in cabinets are in easy reach of children, and any absorbent items like paper towel and toilet paper that would be ruined in the event of a burst pipe.

  3. Make the Most of Your Space

Most of us tend to pile our items on the bottom of the cabinet and therefore the top half remains unutilized. Take advantage of the vertical space: use a variety of stackable storage drawers (preferably clear for easy identification of contents), hooks on the back of the cabinet door to hang lose items, baskets and caddies, or install a tension rod across the cabinet to suspend spray bottles from.

  4. Take a Page from Your Spice Rack

If you have deep cabinets, often the items at the back are hard to reach, and they become lost and forgotten. Take a page from the rotating spice rack in your kitchen and integrate a turntable to organize your hair products or cleaning supplies. Another effective way to utilize your deep cabinets is to install a pull-out organizer. This will help streamline your items, cut down on the clutter and maximize every inch of the space.
