The entryway and kitchen are among the most frequented rooms in your home by all family members and guests. Your entryway gives your guests the first impression of your home, and your kitchen is typically the hub of entertaining. But many of us may struggle with space and functionality. If you find yourself frustrated with the layout and lack of storage, it’s time for a change. You deserve a home that suits your lifestyle and is equal parts functional and beautiful.
We are very excited to share another one of our most recent projects. Earlier this year, we completed a kitchen and mudroom renovation in Hillhurst with our friend Sylvia Daoust from Niche reDesign.
Project Background
The homeowner’s previous kitchen had an L-shaped layout that didn’t allow much room for an island and felt cramped. The kitchen was also very dark with traditional, ornate cabinetry. Additionally, there was a small foyer and closet by the back door, and just off the kitchen, there was an underutilized space with no specific function.

Client Needs
The homeowner was looking to improve the kitchen layout and make the most of the underutilized space in their foyer and the tight entryway. To achieve this, they wanted to keep costs low but invest in good quality, beautiful cabinetry and storage solutions. This was where we came in.
Cabinetry Details
In the kitchen, the cramped space was opened up significantly by establishing the kitchen cabinetry along one wall only and installing a large island. The new layout improves the flow and functionality of the room as well as makes it feel brighter and more spacious.
The newly renovated space is an alluring blend of rustic and modern. In the kitchen, we installed matte white cabinets with Shaker doors and floating shelves in Tobacco Halifax Oak (wood grain) that compliment the look well. Traditional pulls in matte black accent the kitchen cabinets with their look of wrought iron. The striking blue island, while not a Sencillo product, was produced by our parent company Casa Flores and is the centerpiece of the kitchen.
The kitchen now has ample storage, including a pullout garbage and recycling, as well as an appliance garage with a lift-up door to keep appliances tucked away. This helps to keep the counters uncluttered and gives the kitchen a sleek finish.
The congested foyer was combined with the underutilized space just off the kitchen to create a spacious and welcoming mudroom with plenty of storage for hats, coats, footwear, and more. The rustic Tobacco Halifax Oak (wood grain) is continued in the mudroom with the bench top and the stunning sliding barn door, which separates the kitchen from the mudroom.

The finished look is bright, inviting and perfect for entertaining for this family. We couldn’t be happier with the end result.
