Is there something about your home that could use an upgrade? Perhaps a room with a poor layout, or a space that just isn’t working for you anymore? If you are unhappy with some aspects of your home, it’s time to stop contemplating the change and to take the plunge. But will a simple refresh solve your woes, or do you need to embark on a complete renovation?

Here are some of our tips for deciding when to refresh your home and when to renovate:

What is the difference between a refresh and a renovation? The goal of both is typically the same: you want to be happy with your home. So, it all comes down to the size of the project. Are you looking for a complete overhaul of large or multiple rooms in your home, or do you just need a refresh of your cabinets or built-ins installed to improve a tricky space?

When to Refresh
A refresh is the small projects that you can accomplish to bring back the life into your home. Often these are the lower budget items and weekend pursuits. This includes small aesthetic changes, such as:

  • A quick paint refresh

  • An update of hardware like knobs and pulls

  • The replacing of a tired backsplash in the kitchen or bathroom

  • A replacing of light fixtures

  • The resurfacing of cabinetry

  • An installation of a built-in to provide more storage solutions or to solve those awkward nooks in your home

When to Renovate
On the other hand, you should consider a renovation if your concerns and issues are on a bigger scale, such as:

  • A desire to update the look of an entire room such as a kitchen, bathroom or laundry room

  • A need for vastly different cabinetry options to improve storage and space

  • Relocating walls and changing the footprint of a room to improve the layout and functionality of your spaces

  • A need to relocate the plumbing, wiring or other structural components of your home

Renovations typically involve the demolition to be a large stage of the project including, tearing out old cabinetry, removing walls, replacing flooring, and relocating or adding new wiring or plumbing.
