Do you often feel overwhelmed about choosing an outfit, while simultaneously feeling you have absolutely nothing to wear? Getting anxious and stressed about picking your clothes in the morning is a terrible way to begin your day.
Sometimes we think having options is necessary, but in reality, having a large selection of often low-quality clothes just leads to unnecessary clutter and a messy closet. Finding things can be a challenge and more often than not, you lose items in the mix.
Being halfway through fall and almost into winter means the bulky sweaters are out, the puffer jackets have made an appearance, and it’s time to get ready for layers. With all these bulky options, we encourage you to take some time to trim down your closet, downsize your clothes, and opt for a more simple, minimal, and organized wardrobe.
Downsizing your wardrobe will not only get rid of the clutter in your bedroom, but it will also make your morning routine a breeze! Here are 6 ways to get started.
1. Rotate Your Seasonal Clothing
If you haven’t done so already, it’s time to put away your summer clothes and bring out the fall and winter layers. If you don’t do this at the moment, why not give it a try. It frees up space in your closet and dresser, giving you more room to spread out and organize your current wardrobe. It saves space while allowing you to see everything you have, instead of cramming it all in.
2. Try The 40 Hanger Closet
As the title suggests, get 40 hangers (invest in some good ones to make your closet look chic) and stick to 40 hangers. If you have more clothes, then you’ll have to go through the process of deciding what stays and what goes. This is a cutthroat method, but it’s a great approach when you’re trying to downsize and keep things to a minimum. To learn more about the 40 Hanger Closet, click here.
3. Purchase Fewer, High-Quality Items
Less is more! When you get more mindful about your purchases, you begin to choose clothing that is better quality and will last you much longer than that H&M tank top you have in 5 various colours. Instead, be prepared to spend a few extra dollars on one or two basic colours that go with everything and are much better quality. You’ll find yourself wearing all the items in your closet instead of just a few select “favourite” pieces. It’s better on your wallet, wardrobe, and the environment!
4. Create a Capsule Wardrobe
Similar to the 40-hanger closet, this method requires you to pair down your clothing to around 30-40 items seasonally. It begins by identifying your daily outfit categories, such as active wear, work clothes, formal attire, casual dressing, and loungewear. Then, choose the items that fit under these headings and ideally can cross under multiple categories. Essentially, the premise revolves around being able to mix and match all your clothing to create different outfits for various occasions or days of the week.
5. Be Ruthless and Eliminate
As you’re organizing your closet, cull through and get rid of any items that you no longer wear. This includes those “skinny” clothes that you hope to fit into again, items that require tailoring, or pieces you simply haven’t worn in years. Why bother hanging on to them if they are clearly no longer part of your day-to-day style. You can make piles and prepare to sell some on Facebook Marketplace to make a little extra cash or let a consignment store do the work for you. Whatever isn’t sellable, try donating to a non-profit or give them to Goodwill. Whatever you do, try not to throw them in the garbage. Finding your clothes a second home is a more ethical way of disposing of your things, while also giving them a chance to live again in someone else’s closet!
6. Get a Custom-Built Wardrobe
Once you have gone through the process of minimizing your wardrobe and downsizing to a more sizeable clothing selection, we can help you create the closet of your dreams! We can put in shelving, hanging rods, or hooks to better organize your items and display them in a way where nothing will get lost. Having an organized closet feels fantastic. It’s amazing the domino effect it will have on the rest of your room.
