One of our favourite projects to complete in a home is the kitchen, and we have certainly completed many exciting transformations during our 15 years with Casa Flores and the last few years with Sencillo. We love staying on top of the evolving trends and working with clients that like to be adventurous in their renovations.
Here is what we see as the focus of kitchen renovations in 2021:
The Colour Palette
White kitchens continue to be popular, and rightly so! The white kitchen is clean, timeless, and chic. However, there is a trend towards bringing in more pops of colour, especially blue and green. One of our favourite trends is to style white kitchens with brightly coloured islands, like this striking blue island in this stunning kitchen that we completed with Sylvia of Niche reDesign. The island becomes the centrepiece of the space and pulls all of the gorgeous design elements together.
The Styles and Textures
Over the past 15 years, the three most popular design styles have been the traditional, contemporary and transitional styles. Now we see the emergence of a new style that focuses on natural and organic elements like natural stone, wood grains and textures like exposed brick. Many of our curated woodgrain finishes are an excellent fit for this trend, including Sand Gladstone Oak, Natural Halifax Oak, and Jackson Pine.

For countertops, we have seen that quartz remains one of the most popular choices and for a good reason. Unlike granite, which was the most popular choice 15 years ago, quartz is much more durable, and non-porous meaning it stays much cleaner and requires less maintenance. Quartz has also evolved to look more natural than in the past, with textures that mimic the look of marble, concrete, and natural stone.
The Continued Rise of the Biophilic Atmosphere
While biophilia can be traced back to the 80s, it has continued to become a highly popular design style in recent years. Biophilia is incorporating more elements from nature into your home and has been proven to increase your overall well-being. This includes the use of natural light and natural materials like wood and the incorporation of plants, which not only make a room more welcoming and improve your air quality but also bring freshness and joy to your space.
The Flirtation with Beautiful Fixtures
As we saw with the trends for bathrooms in 2021, fixtures no longer blend into the background of your space. The limited colour and finish choices have been expanded beyond the classic options and can be matched to suit your unique style. Just imagine how well a champagne bronze faucet would look against your quartz countertops.
Cabinet hardware finishes have also evolved. Take a peek at the many finishes that you can choose from on our website.
The Expansion of Appliances
Gone are the days when the stove and oven were sufficient in the average kitchen. We have seen quite the expansion of the arsenal of kitchen tools and appliances in recent years as many homeowners gravitate to cooking at home more often and becoming more serious about this art form. Many factors contributed to this shift, none more prevalent than the pandemic we still find ourselves in. We see an increase in attraction to steam ovens, speed ovens, warming ovens, pressure cookers, slow cookers, air fryers, a wide array of specialty coffee makers and so on. And along with these new appliances come new creative ways to blend them seamlessly into your kitchen, which is one of our specialties here at Sencillo!
