How to Re-Create Our Favourite Curated Styles: Urban Farmhouse

Urban Farmhouse

The farmhouse look is traditionally comfortable and inviting, weathered and worn. Think welcoming porches, freshly baked bread, and home-grown herbs. The design elements are practical but beautiful: rustic woods, well-worn floors, and faded barnwood. At the same time, the “urban” version is clean and bright, crisp and modern.

If you are interested in recreating this curated style into your home, here are some ideas to get you started:

Cabinets:

Shaker cabinets offer a more traditional look, but in this modern twist on a traditional style, slab doors can work too! The key is to pair them with the right hardware and finishes.
One of our favourite looks is to match white cabinets with floating wood-look shelving to give your kitchen a more open and airy feeling. On these shelves, display beautiful dishes, potted plants or herbs, or decorative accessories to show off your personal taste.

Some of the Sencillo finishes that go well with the urban farmhouse look are: White, Stone Gray, Old Cottage Oak and Natural Halifax Oak. You can view all of these on our finishes page on our website and work with our in-house designers to pick which finish will look best in your new kitchen.

Colours & Finishes:

Colour combinations for the Urban Farmhouse look focus on clean whites, light grays, and faded hues of blue, green and red. If you have a small kitchen, focus on lighter colours to make the room feel less cramped and give the illusion of more space. A couple of “can’t fail” greys to check out: Benjamin Moore HC-172 Revere Pewter and Sherwin Williams SW 7015 Repose Gray.

When it comes to counters, there are several materials that suit the urban farmhouse style well. You can choose from stone, marble, butcher block, or even stainless steel. We are obsessed with the look of the light stone counters, white shaker cabinets and rustic wood accents:

Have fun with your backsplash! We recommend introducing beautiful patterns and light colours into your kitchen backsplash. We’ve assembled some of our favourite designs on our Pinterest page.

Flooring options can include grey and weathered style plank floors or even tile. Luxury vinyl plank is an excellent option due to its warmth and durability. It comes in many colours and finishes, some of which amazingly reproduce the look of worn wood floors. Another great option is these tiles, which also look like distressed wood:

Rustic wood or shiplap feature walls are common with the farmhouse style and really complete the look. We are huge fans of this timeless look:

Fixtures:

A big farm-style apron sink is typical of the urban farmhouse style and gives a stunning look to your kitchen. While dishes are a task no one enjoys, having a beautiful apron sink in your newly renovated kitchen makes it a little bit easier! Apron sinks come in many finishes, including porcelain, stainless steel, stone and copper. Here are some great ideas for farmhouse sinks:

For lighting fixtures, we recommend vintage-looking, oil-rubbed bronze, brushed stainless or nickel for a farmhouse kitchen. All of these styles go well with this look and really add character to your kitchen. We are partial to the industrial style fixtures:

To top off your fixtures, we recommend picking out faucets in a similar style of your lighting. Vintage, oil-rubbed bronze and brushed stainless steel pair well with this style.

How stunning is this oil-rubbed bronze style faucet in contrast with the white apron style sink?:

Appliances:

If you are looking to complete your look, add retro or vintage type appliances to your kitchen. These really tie your whole kitchen together.

A great example that would look stunning in your kitchen is Smeg, a popular brand of retro appliances that fit the bill! Don’t believe us? Take a look at how seamlessly these appliances fit with this style:
